Reuse Networks is a new, vibrant, not-for-profit organisation that promotes the establishment of reuse networks within and between neighbourhoods, companies, schools and other organisations. The two underlying objectives of these networks are to reduce individual levels of consumption (i.e. the amount of goods we buy) and to reduce the quantity of waste sent to landfill. The former objective relates directly to helping combat climate change. There are numerous other benefits that are associated with reuse networks. Many of us donate unwanted goods to friends and charities or lend items out to those we know on a regular basis. The reuse networks aim to build on these existing practices by widening the network of individuals in regular contact with each other within a neighbourhood or an organisation (or within a group of organisations). Reuse networks provide a way of advertising, firstly, what people wish to donate, exchange, lend or sell (thus avoiding wasteful disposal of goods that may be useful to others) and, secondly, what people are seeking on a temporary or permanent basis (thus avoiding the purchase of new goods). Information can also be sought (e.g. recommendations for electricians, plumbers). Each reuse network is set up and run by a local volunteer, known as a reuse network co-ordinator. We are now actively seeking more volunteers, who want to get involved in developing more environmentally sustainable communities and organisations. |
